50 Books in 2012 - August Recap

This summer set me back a little with the promptness of my posts, so I know I've posted by July and August recaps in the same week. Oops!

I set a goal to read 50 books in 2012. This month, I read 6 more books. That brings my 2012 total to 45 books read from January through August!

See previous recaps below:

January | February | March | April | May | June | July

This month, I read:

Aspire by Kevin Hall:

Aspire is a business book of sorts. It dives into the origin of 12 powerful words that have the power to change your life. I don't remember where I first heard of Aspire, but it was a good read and definitely eye-opening.

Molokai by Alan Brennert:

This book is one of those that sticks with you long after you read it. I read this book on our trip to Canada, and I blame the minimal fish I caught on how good this book was. I chose to read instead of fish on a couple of days; the book was too riveting to put down.

The story is based in the last 1890's, when the leprosy outbreak was spreading throughout the world, and especially Hawaii. Molokai had a leprosy colony on it, and this book tells the story of a young girl who is sent away from her family after contracting the disease. The story follows her through the rest of her life, as she tries to live her life in spite of the circumstances around her.

Before I read this book, I knew almost nothing about the leprosy outbreak, what the disease did to people, and about the colony on Molokai. I had briefly heard about the colony while living in Hawaii, but we never went to Molokai, so I hadn't really learned anything about it.

Just... WOW. I want to do some of my own research now, and read more about that time period, and about what it was like for people there. This book is fiction, but it's obviously filled with snippets of real life.

If you read one book the rest of this year, read this one!

Start With Why by Simon Sinek:

Start With Why is another book from my list of business books to read. Simon talks about the importance of starting with WHY in your business, and how that's the only real way to differentiate from others, and to eventually be a leader and lead people. He talks a lot about the big leaders in business: Apple, Southwest Airlines, Harley Davidson... This book gave me a lot of insight into things I should be doing with my business, and ways to help hone my WHY.

The Grand Finale by Janet Evanovich:

Another shallow-plotted fast read from Janet. Some may resent the lack of a deep plot, but I like them!

Naughty Neighbor by Janet Evanovich:

Similar book to all the rest of the light hearted romances that Janet wrote in the mid 90's. The same humor she puts into Stephanie Plum is picking up force in these light hearted reads.

Seven Up by Janet Evanovich:

Book seven in the Stephanie Plum series. I am addicted. I cannot read this series fast enough!

---

I think I'm going to easily surpass my goal of 50 books this year. I've still got a huge list of books to read, so there's no reason to quit at 50! Have any good books you've read lately? I'd love to add them to my list!

  1. Glad to see you liked "Molokai" too, as did most everyone in our book club when we read it a year ago (I may have given you the suggestion earlier this year ;) A lot of fascinating history there that I never knew. I just checked out a Kristin Hannah book today (cannot remember which one I grabbed off the shelf) based on your recommendations and I'm looking forward to it. First I have to finish "Lost Symbols" by Dan Brown that took up all of my evening last night when I should have been doing other things! Enjoying your book reviews very much and happy reading,
