Yesterday, Matt and I watched the Vikings game at his parent's house.
I decided to learn to crochet the day before, so I brought over my project - a winter hat, to work on during the game. For someone who didn't have much knitting knowledge or success, crocheting seemed to be a little harder than I thought it would be to pick up. Nevertheless, I brought my project over and started working on it about 8 minutes into the game.
10 minutes into crocheting, the yarn decided to stop coming out of the middle of the um... wrapped hotdog-shaped bundle. Skein?? [As you can tell, I'm quite new to this whole thing.]
I tried everything I could think of to make the yarn come out again, but it just would not budge. After tugging and wiggling for a few minutes, I finally ripped off the label and decided that I was going to [brilliant idea ahead...] unravel the hotdog bundle and roll it back up in a regular ball so it wouldn't get stuck again.
So. I began.
What I thought was going to be an easy 15 minute task turned into a three hour task. Not kidding at all. I worked on unraveling the hotdog bundle for the entire Vikings game and into the next NFL game after that. I unraveled in through sports snacks and pop cans. I worked on it until my fingers were sore and my head hurt.
But, I made it! I now have a big ball, the size of a huge grapefruit, from the rats nest of yarn that it once was.
Now the ironic part.
The yarn cost $2.40. I spent 3 hours unraveling a massive rats nest to save $2.40 in yarn.
Why?
Because. Because I'm: 1-Stingy and 2-Stubborn. And, I'm a Hensel. I can't help it.
I'm kind of annoyed/proud that I spent so much time working to save the yarn. I really love the colors, and if [IF] I ever figure out how to read the crochet directions correctly and make a wearable hat, I'll take a picture and show you my final product.
My biggest gripe is that I didn't get a picture of the rats nest in progress. I mentioned it to Matt, but he was too busy cheering for the Vikings to either hear me or follow through. It's ok. They played great by the way.
I was a little nervous because - no joke - the three games of the season that Matt and I have watched have been 3 of the games that they lost. I'm not superstitious by nature but man, that's enough to make you want to hide in the woods during the game. Almost.
So, here's to being stingy and stubborn. Mostly, to being stingy. In times like this, that's a good thing right?
I could go into the newest of the R's - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Repurpose!, but that's a topic for another post, I think.
