3rd Beatitude: Let's Be Meek.

I was going to write this post last night, right after I came back from Church group. But... I started to work on my crochet project and pretty soon it was 3 hours later, my head hurt, my eyes felt permanently crossed and I kind of felt a little like I was going to throw up. Focusing my eyes that closely for that long apparently isn't good for me.

But, after a night's sleep and breakfast, I'm rarin' to go again. And my crochet hat is [I think] making progress. I hope.

Last night at Church group, we talked about the third of the beatitudes: "Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth."

When you hear the word "meek," what comes to mind? Weak, feeble, fragile? That is what we typically think of when we hear meek, all negative words in our society today. That isn't what Jesus is referring to when He tells us to be meek. Instead, He means humble and dependent. Humble and dependent on Him.

We talked last night, about how Jesus called over a child and told His disciples that if they wanted to get into the kingdom of Heaven, they needed to be like a child. Children are fully dependent on their parents for survival, and they know they need their parents' help in life. We need God's help, we need to depend on Him for our life and for our salvation. We can't handle everything on our own, no matter how hard we try. That's the basis of this beatitude.

I think that is so much harder said that done, as most teachings of Jesus are. But it is something to strive for. To let go of the reins and become dependent on Jesus. To turn to Him for survival and to get through our lives, whether they are filled with happy or hard times right now. To be humble and accept that we can't and shouldn't live our lives on our own.

Let's try that today. Lord, help me to be meek today, and turn my problems over to You, and to trust that You know best.

*Also - for those of you who were praying for Matt Miller last week, I ask that you continue to pray. His surgery is over, but he is still in the hospital. His stomach is having a little trouble adjusting to the restructuring it went through. Hopefully he'll be out of the hospital this weekend and can begin to recover at home. Prayers for remission as well. Oh, and strength for his sister Audrey, as she takes on the role of his caretaker.
