Caribou Coffee - Words for the Spirit

Today, I met with a fellow religious ed teacher at a local coffee shop. I am considering joining the chamber of commerce in my area, and this lovely lady was sharing with me her personal experiences as a member. We were at the local coffee shop - Caribou Coffee.

Now first, I am not a coffee drinker. Pop - yes, Coffee - no. My sister LOVES it. My husband LOVES it. My dad loves more of the cappuccino-type thing. My mom - Dt Coke. I'm trying to become a little more comfortable with the whole coffeeshop setting though, because it is the best meeting place for a quick chat with clients, contacts, and really anyone in general. My problem is that I have to buy something there, but the only things I like are you guessed it - pop, and also the smoothies. Maybe one day I'll expand into hot chocolate or something. [Living on the WILD SIDE! Woohoo!]

Caribou Coffee might be a foreign name to some of you. The website says they have shops in 15 states, mostly in the east and the midwest. I know that in the rest of the country/world, Starbucks is the big one. While both are the same to me in the fact that I'd rather have a pop than anything remotely coffee-ish, I like the fact that Caribou is smaller; it's less of a conglomerate or whatever the right word would be. It's got a really great feel inside too.

Today though, Caribou captured my heart just a little bit more.

While I still don't like the smell of coffee on my clothes, and I really don't like the taste of anything coffee-ish [even lip gloss], I found a little gem of an inspirational book in the shop. I am getting [as long as someone is there to sign for it!] my Nikon D700 tomorrow, so once I get it up and running, I'll take some pictures of this book. But for now, I will share with you some of the words in it.

Wise words they are...

Caribou Coffee. Life is short. Stay awake for it. [That's their slogan. How creative and catchy is that??]

Savor every sip.
Dream Big. Act Bigger.
Do it for love, not profit.
Do something that scares you.
Laugh so hard you cry.
Make time for silly.
Spin the globe than pack your bags.
Compliment a stranger.
Build communities. Not Empires.
Plant lots of trees.
Grow older without ever growing up.
Adopt an animal.
Hold hands, not grudges.
Max out your passport.
Get your hands dirty.
Shave your head, at least once. [I don't know that I'll ever willingly do this. Matt has done it, more than once. My dad has this secret -not anymore- desire to shave his head someday. I think he'll do it once he retires. At least, I'm going to encourage him to.]
Walk, don't drive.
Skip, don't walk.
Be the first to apologize.
Listen first, talk second.
Thank a teacher.
Learn to dance a jig.

And again - Life Is Short. Stay Awake For It.

There is more, but I'll save that for another post. Savor that, reread it.

I just love every word of that. Quotes like this pick up my soul and make me feel like I can conquer the world. I feel happy, hopeful and excited about life. Not that I don't otherwise, but reading this like this just add that extra little boost to my life.

What a wonderful world we live in.

Enjoy the ride,

Laura

  1. I've thought of you getting your camera tomorrow (well, today now) off and on all day. I'm so happy for you but just a little bit green! LOL

  2. Mott - I know, I am so excited! It's being delivered to my parent's house [apartment mail is sometimes sketchy], so I'm hoping someone's there to pick it up. The anticipation is killing me!! Thanks for being excited for me! [And being a little green is ok too! :) I was real green until I finally hit the order-now button!]
