Four Somethings

I read this blog post earlier this week from one of my favorite photographers/bloggers.

It got me thinking about gift-giving and the struggle against clutter and obligatory gifting this time of year.

One of the comments on Tara's blog post really intrigued me. One commenter said she uses a formula each year for her kids. It is: Something to Wear, Something they Want, Something they Need, Something to Read.

Four gifts. 

Four meaningful gifts.

Matt and I don't have kids yet but someday when we do, I think that's a great idea! That way, there's no competition or hurt feelings because someone got 10 presents and someone else got 12. It lifts the pressure and the burden. It brings out the fun.

I am really trying hard this year to make conscious gift decisions for people; to really give them something they want or need. Things that will enrich their lives instead of cluttering them up. 

It's challenging though. Coming up with the perfect gifts is hard.

  1. I have heard about people doing "four somethings" for Christmas. I love the idea, but I kind of spoil my kids this time of year... hard to break old habit. :)

  2. Another good idea is "experiences" not "things". One of our favorite family gifts we received a couple years ago was a membership to the Minnesota Zoo. The kids loved it and so did we. Families that play together, stay together.

  3. Yes, that's a great idea!! Especially with kids, there are so many experiences to be given as gifts that they would LOVE! Any plans to give experiences this year for Christmas?
